Volcano cause and effect essay

There are volcanoes all over the world.  They are above sea level and below the oceans .  What a volcano actually is a hole in the Earth’s crust that lava and other Earth debris come out of a lot of the time or even hundreds of years apart.   A lot of volcanoes are in a form of a mountain or a hill that have a crater from past eruptions.  Many times, before an eruption, there is activity in the Earth’s surface that make the ground shake or even the crater in the volcano grow.  Scientists are getting better at predicting eruptions.  This can save many lives.

The broad, well-vegetated edifice of Poás, one of the most active volcanoes of Costa Rica, contains three craters along a N-S line. The frequently visited multi-hued summit crater lakes of the basaltic-to-dacitic volcano, which is one of Costa Rica's most prominent natural landmarks, are easily accessible by vehicle from the nearby capital city of San José. A N-S-trending fissure cutting the 2708-m-high complex stratovolcano extends to the lower northern flank, where it has produced the Congo stratovolcano and several lake-filled maars. The southernmost of the two summit crater lakes, Botos, is cold and clear and last erupted about 7500 years ago. The more prominent geothermally heated northern lake, Laguna Caliente, is one of the world's most acidic natural lakes, with a pH of near zero. It has been the site of frequent phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions since the first historical eruption was reported in 1828. Eruptions often include geyser-like ejections of crater-lake water.

Subglacial volcanoes develop underneath icecaps . They are made up of flat lava which flows at the top of extensive pillow lavas and palagonite . When the icecap melts, the lava on top collapses, leaving a flat-topped mountain. These volcanoes are also called table mountains , tuyas , or (uncommonly) mobergs. Very good examples of this type of volcano can be seen in Iceland, however, there are also tuyas in British Columbia . The origin of the term comes from Tuya Butte , which is one of the several tuyas in the area of the Tuya River and Tuya Range in northern British Columbia. Tuya Butte was the first such landform analyzed and so its name has entered the geological literature for this kind of volcanic formation. The Tuya Mountains Provincial Park was recently established to protect this unusual landscape, which lies north of Tuya Lake and south of the Jennings River near the boundary with the Yukon Territory .

Over the next several days melted snow combined with the new ash to produce lahars that roared down the North and South Forks of the Toutle River and drainages to the south of the volcano.  In general, the eruption had been much larger than most anticipated, but the fact that a hazards study had been carried out, that public officials were quick to act and evacuate the danger zone, and that the volcano was under constant monitoring, resulted in the minimization of loss of life to only 62 instead of a much larger number that could have been killed had not these efforts been in place. Since the 1980 eruption, several volcanic domes have been emplaced in the crater and some have been blasted out.  In the future, it is expected that new domes will continue to form, eventually building the volcano back to a form that will look more like it did prior to the 1980 eruption.
