Dissertation Writing Help & Resources
There’s no hard and fast rule about this, but if you run across something that you should have found in the process of reviewing the literature, or something that has been published since you completed the literature review, then you should probably go back and work it into Chapter 2. The exception is when your results lead you to a conclusion that you had not anticipated when writing the first three chapters. You should then go back and find references that help you explain these unexpected results and include those new references only in the Discussion chapter.
